Scanned pages, high-resolution photographs, repeated images, embedded fonts, and complex graphics are common sources of PDF size. A text-only document may already be compact, so a second compression pass can save little while increasing the risk of visible degradation.
Before compressing, note the original file size and page count. Open a page with small text, a photo, and a diagram so the same details can be compared after processing.
Balance size against the document purpose
An email attachment can tolerate different settings from an archival contract, a print-ready brochure, or a medical image. Choose a result that meets the receiving service limit without making signatures, fine print, barcodes, or diagrams difficult to read.
Browser compression results vary with the source. Image-heavy scans often have more room to shrink than PDFs that already use efficient image and font encoding.
