Password-Protect and Unlock PDF Files Safely

A PDF open password can reduce casual access when the file is sent through an ordinary channel, but it does not replace controlled storage, expiring links, device security, or an organization's document policy. Send the password through a different channel when practical.
Use a unique, sufficiently long password and store it in a password manager. Losing the only password can make the protected document unusable.
Protect or unlock only authorized documents
PDF ViewNow provides browser tools for setting a password and for removing protection when the current password is known. Unlocking is appropriate for documents you own or are explicitly authorized to modify; it is not a way to bypass access controls.
Local browser processing reduces routine server exposure, but the downloaded output is still a sensitive file. Save it only to a trusted device and remove temporary copies according to the document policy.
Test the new file
Open the protected output in a second reader and confirm that the intended password is required. For an unlocked output, confirm that it opens without the old password and that all pages, forms, links, and attachments still work.
Keep an authorized recovery copy in a secure location. Do not overwrite the only source until the new document has been tested.

An open password is enforced through PDF encryption, but overall security also depends on password strength, file handling, and the reader implementation.
Can I unlock a PDF without knowing its password?
